France's Direction générale de l'armement delivered the first two Falcon 2000LXS Albatros maritime surveillance and intervention aircraft to the French Navy on 27 and 31 July 2026. The DGA publicised the milestone on 8 September, while Dassault Aviation confirmed the handover on 9 September. Both aircraft are destined for Flottille 24F at Lann-Bihoué, where naval experimentation is beginning ahead of the first operational capability.
AVSIMAR Has Entered the Delivery Phase
The deliveries move AVSIMAR beyond flight-test and certification activity into fleet introduction. The programme plans an initial force of 12 Albatros aircraft, with seven ordered in December 2020 and another five in September 2025. A third aircraft is planned by the end of 2026, followed by a stated rhythm of two deliveries per year.
Albatros Combines a Business-Jet Airframe With Maritime Sensors
The Albatros is based on the Falcon 2000LXS but is militarised for maritime surveillance and intervention. Its principal sensors include the Thales SearchMaster X-band active electronically scanned array radar and Safran EuroFLIR 410 electro-optical system, integrated through a mission system developed by Naval Group. The aircraft also incorporates dedicated communications and search-and-rescue mission equipment.
Using a mature business-jet airframe can reduce some airworthiness and support risks compared with developing a clean-sheet patrol aircraft, but the mission system is what determines military utility. Sensor fusion, communications, operator workstations and procedures must perform as an integrated system over long maritime sorties. The current milestone confirms physical delivery; it does not mean the aircraft have already completed every naval operational evaluation.
The Fleet Will Replace Ageing Maritime Surveillance Assets
AVSIMAR is intended to renew and reinforce France's lighter maritime surveillance and intervention component. The first 12 aircraft are planned to cover intervention missions and part of the wider surveillance requirement, while the DGA has previously said a second phase will use complementary assets, including drones, to help address the remaining surveillance demand. This makes Albatros part of a broader distributed maritime-awareness architecture rather than a stand-alone solution.
The role spans defence of maritime approaches, state action at sea, surveillance, search and rescue and support to civilian authorities. A modern radar and electro-optical suite should provide better detection and identification options than the legacy fleets it replaces, but mission effectiveness will still depend on crew training, data connectivity and coordination with ships, helicopters, satellites and unmanned systems.
Military Experimentation Is the Next Critical Gate
The DGA states that the first two aircraft have entered practical naval experimentation through the French Navy's evaluation structure. That phase matters because a certified aircraft can still require tactical validation before commanders declare a usable operational capability. The first operational capability therefore remains a subsequent milestone, not something that should be assumed from the July deliveries.
The programme's near-term schedule is unusually clear: a third aircraft by the end of 2026 and then two per year. Delivery performance, completion of naval experimentation and formal operational declaration will be the key checkpoints. By separating those steps, the programme can be tracked without conflating physical handover, military evaluation and operational fielding.
The programme also has a workforce dimension because French maritime aviation is introducing new sensors and mission workflows at the same time as it replaces ageing aircraft. Training operators to exploit SearchMaster, EuroFLIR 410 and the Naval Group mission system will be as important as receiving the airframes, particularly during the transition from legacy Falcon surveillance fleets.

The next publication-grade milestone will be the first independently verifiable event that changes the programme status described above, such as a delivery, acceptance event, production start, exercised option, operational test or formal fielding decision.
