Patria announced on 8 September 2026 that it and the Finnish Defence Forces have agreed on serial procurement of more than 100 TREMOS mobile mortar systems. The package also includes options for hundreds more, while deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026 and continue through 2028. The decision follows a pre-series batch delivered to the Finnish Army in 2025, making the new agreement a transition from evaluation and initial fielding into larger-scale acquisition.
Finland Moves TREMOS From Pre-Series to Serial Procurement
The quantity is significant for a system that remains relatively new in Patria's weapon portfolio. It gives Finland a domestic launch-customer role and establishes a production baseline that Patria can use when marketing TREMOS internationally. The company did not disclose the contract value in its public announcement, so a unit-price estimate would be speculative.
TREMOS Is Designed to Mobilise Existing Heavy Mortar Capability
Patria describes TREMOS as a mobile evolution of the traditional heavy mortar rather than a turreted mortar vehicle. Its recoil-management technology allows the weapon to be integrated onto a range of vehicle platforms while retaining the ability to use in-service barrels and breeches. That approach is intended to preserve existing ammunition, ballistic tables, training knowledge and parts of the established support system.
Operationally, mobility can reduce the time a mortar team remains exposed after firing and make it easier to reposition between missions. The concept does not remove the need for fire-control, communications, ammunition handling and crew training, but it can improve survivability compared with a weapon that must be dismounted and emplaced manually. Finland's procurement suggests the Army sees enough value in that mobility to move beyond the 2025 pre-series batch.
Domestic Production Supports Finland's Security-of-Supply Model
Patria says the serial systems will be manufactured at its Finnish production facilities with participation from dozens of suppliers. The company estimates an employment effect of around 130 person-years. In Finnish defence planning, that domestic industrial footprint has strategic value because it can preserve maintenance, repair and production competence during periods when cross-border supply chains are under pressure.
The option for hundreds more systems is also important, but it should not be counted as a confirmed order. Options create a contractual pathway for expansion if funding and military requirements support it; they are not the same as funded serial quantities. The confirmed baseline is more than 100 systems, with the option signalling that Finland wants room to scale the fleet without restarting the procurement process from zero.
The Next Test Is Production and Unit-Level Adoption
Deliveries beginning in 2026 mean the industrial transition should become visible quickly. Production pace, training throughput and the number of formations receiving the system will show how rapidly TREMOS becomes a routine Army capability. Public reporting does not yet provide a detailed annual delivery breakdown or the exact vehicle configuration for every system in the order.
International interest will be another indicator. A sizeable Finnish order gives potential customers a reference user and a real production line, but export success will depend on vehicle integration, local ammunition requirements and procurement economics.
