Türkiye’s Digital “Heart” of Naval Platforms Hits 60th Delivery

Türkiye’s indigenously developed Ship Data Distribution System (GVDS) — often called the “heart” of naval platforms — has reached its 60th production milestone, according to HAVELSAN. The latest system, tested to “A” grade standards, will be installed on the Turkish Navy’s eighth MILGEM-class warship. Developed entirely in Türkiye, the GVDS ensures seamless data flow between a vessel’s weapons, sensors, and control systems, including advanced submarine systems.

HAVELSAN first delivered the system in 2008 for the TCG Heybeliada corvette. Since then, the technology has been deployed across surface ships and submarines, accumulating over 300 years of operational service without major failures. “GVDS and its submarine version ensure data flow and system integration at high performance even in the toughest conditions,” Anadolu Agency reported.

Critical Role in Submarine Operations

The submarine variant, known as the Submarine Data Distribution System (SDDS), acts as the digital nervous system of a vessel. It connects sonar, periscope, navigation, and weapon systems to ensure real-time, low-latency data sharing. This allows crews to maintain full situational awareness and react instantly to threats.

HAVELSAN officials note that the system was designed to operate reliably “even in a rough, stormy sea, allowing the ship to hit the bullseye.” Its redundant architecture ensures 24/7 functionality, with automatic failover mechanisms maintaining performance if a component fails.

Technical Advantages

The GVDS/SDDS family offers:

  • Real-Time Data Distribution: Low-latency transfers keep all critical systems synchronized.
  • Redundancy and Durability: Dual processors and military-grade hardware withstand harsh maritime conditions.
  • Universal Connectivity: Supports modern and legacy systems via Ethernet, serial, and analog interfaces.
  • Data Logging & Simulation: Enables training and post-mission analysis using live system data.

National and Global Impact

HAVELSAN has increased domestic component production to over 80%, boosting Türkiye’s defense autonomy. The system is also attracting interest abroad, with exports to Pakistan, Ukraine, and Nigeria. Its integration into submarine modernization programs, including the Preveze-class upgrade, underscores its role in future projects like Türkiye’s MİLDEN indigenous submarine.
