Indian Army loitering munitions procurement has moved into a major production phase after India signed contracts worth approximately ₹1,577 crore for 840 one-way precision-strike systems from Tata Advanced Systems Limited and NIBE Private Limited.

The procurement represents one of India’s largest concentrated purchases of loitering munitions and gives the Army’s artillery formations a substantially larger inventory of weapons able to search for, track and strike tactical targets beyond conventional direct-fire ranges.

Indian Army Loitering Munitions Move From Approval to Contract

India’s Defence Acquisition Council approved the Loiter Munition System for Artillery Regiments on 29 December 2025 as part of a wider package of approximately ₹79,000 crore in defence acquisition proposals.

The Ministry of Defence said at the time that the loitering munition would be used for precision strikes against tactical targets.

That approval has now progressed into contracts with two domestic suppliers, moving the programme from acquisition planning into serial delivery.

Tata and NIBE Split the 840-System Requirement

Reporting on the final agreement identifies Tata Advanced Systems and NIBE as the two suppliers selected for the requirement.

Current Indian reporting states that Tata will supply 480 systems and NIBE 360, producing the combined total of 840 loitering munitions.

This differs slightly from the allocation discussed during the tender phase in July 2026, when media reports suggested Tata could receive approximately 64% of the requirement and NIBE 36%.

The final reported 480/360 distribution corresponds to approximately 57% and 43% respectively, indicating that the final negotiated allocation may have changed between commercial bidding and contract signature.

The final signed contract structure should therefore take precedence over earlier bidder-allocation estimates.

NIBE’s Offer Has Been Linked to Vayuastra

Earlier tender reporting identified NIBE’s proposed system as Vayuastra, associated with the SkyStriker loitering-munition architecture.

NIBE has expanded rapidly into missiles, launch systems, autonomous platforms and other high-growth defence technologies as India attempts to deepen private-sector manufacturing capacity.

India’s Ministry of Defence highlighted that expansion on 23 May 2026 when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated NIBE Group’s new Defence Manufacturing Complex at Shirdi.

The facility is intended to support advanced artillery systems, missiles, rocket systems, energetic materials, space technologies and autonomous defence platforms.

The final configuration of the 360 systems to be delivered under the latest contract should nevertheless be described only according to information formally released by NIBE or the Ministry of Defence.

Tata Adds Another High-Value Army Programme

Tata Advanced Systems has become one of India’s most significant private-sector defence integrators.

Its portfolio spans military aircraft manufacturing, helicopters, armoured vehicles, aerospace structures, missiles and unmanned technologies.

The company already supplies Indian Army mobility platforms and is participating in major artillery programmes including the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System.

The loitering-munition contract extends Tata’s role further into consumable precision-strike weapons, an area where manufacturing throughput and supply-chain resilience are increasingly important.

India Wants Domestic Production, Not Just Domestic Assembly

Electronic Warfare Will Determine Battlefield Effectiveness

One of the main operational risks is electronic warfare.

Modern battlefields increasingly feature GNSS jamming, datalink disruption, spoofing and electronic detection.

Long-range loitering munitions therefore need resilient navigation and communications if they are to maintain effectiveness against a technologically capable opponent.

Exactly how the contracted Indian systems address those threats has not been comprehensively disclosed in publicly available contract information.

Those characteristics are likely to become central evaluation metrics once the systems enter wider Army service.

Counter-UAS Pressure Is Rising at the Same Time

The reported 12-month delivery timeline places considerable pressure on industrial execution.

Producing hundreds of complete weapon systems requires more than airframe assembly.

Suppliers need sufficient stocks of sensors, propulsion systems, datalinks, warhead components and other critical electronics while maintaining consistent quality across the production run.

For a fast-track programme, the key metric is therefore whether Tata and NIBE can expand manufacturing quickly without degrading reliability or acceptance-test performance.

The Main Strategic Opportunity Is a Scalable Domestic Strike Ecosystem

If successful, the procurement could establish more than an Army inventory.

A production run of this size can create repeat demand for propulsion, sensors, avionics, datalinks, energetics and software across the Indian supply chain.

That industrial capacity could support future Army orders as well as requirements from the Air Force, Navy and international customers.

For India, the strategic advantage would be the ability to replenish a high-consumption class of precision weapon domestically rather than depending primarily on imported finished systems during a prolonged conflict.

The first milestone will be the initial production deliveries from Tata Advanced Systems and NIBE.
