Petrel Technologies says the U.S. Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment has evaluated its AERO Sky hybrid VTOL aircraft in live-fire mothership and airborne communications-relay roles.

The disclosure follows earlier 101st Airborne Division testing in which AERO Sky carried and released armed FPV drones during a Joint Readiness Training Center rotation.

Ranger Evaluation Builds on Earlier Army Testing

Mothership Architecture Extends FPV Reach

Petrel markets AERO Sky as a modular hybrid-VTOL platform able to support high-endurance ISR, cargo and mobility tasks, strike support and communications relay. In the mothership role, the larger aircraft carries smaller FPV or one-way drones forward and releases them closer to the target area, shifting the launch point beyond the ground unit’s normal battery and control-link range. The same aircraft can also act as an airborne relay, addressing one of the main constraints on long-range FPV employment when direct line of sight is unavailable.

The operational value therefore comes from combining transport, release and communications rather than from the performance of the smaller drone alone. Petrel has not published a detailed performance sheet for the exact mothership load used in the Ranger test, so endurance, payload, release range and the number of simultaneously supported FPVs should not be inferred. Company-reported live-fire activity is meaningful experimentation evidence, but it remains weaker than an Army-authored test report or acquisition announcement.
