Baykar’s P.180 EVO Takes Flight with the Italian Army

Türkiye’s Baykar and Italy’s Piaggio Mark Strategic Aviation Breakthrough

In a significant milestone for defense ties, Baykar’s newly acquired P.180 EVO aircraft has officially entered service with the Italian Army. The aircraft was cleared for operations following successful delivery and integration tests.

Eventually this marks the first operational use of the P.180 EVO since Baykar acquired a key stake in Piaggio Aerospace, the Italian manufacturer. The move reflects Baykar’s broader vision to expand its aviation capabilities beyond drones. Moreover, it supports NATO-aligned forces with manned platforms.

P.180 EVO’s Role and Strategic Potential in Europe

Contrarily the P.180 EVO is known for its unique twin turboprop pusher design and impressive speed. It will now serve the Italian Army as a liaison and utility aircraft. Notably, it offers low operating costs, fast climb rates, and modern avionics.

Therefor these advantages make the aircraft ideal for missions like personnel transport and surveillance coordination. In addition, Baykar may later adapt the platform for unmanned or optionally piloted operations. This aligns with the company’s expertise in AI-powered drones.

“The P.180 EVO’s commissioning by a NATO army proves the confidence placed in Baykar’s design excellence,” said a defense analyst in Ankara. “Therefore, this could mark a turning point for Türkiye’s integration into European aerospace.”

Strengthening Türkiye–Italy Defense Ties Amid Shifting Geopolitics

This deployment reflects a broader shift in European defense strategies. While traditional alliances remain, NATO members are increasingly turning to diverse industrial partners. Türkiye, with its dynamic defense sector, is gaining strategic relevance.

Baykar’s entry into Italy’s manned aviation sector strengthens this trend. As a result, it showcases Türkiye’s capacity to support NATO missions through modern, interoperable systems.

Meanwhile, industry experts view this as a gateway for deeper collaboration. In addition, it demonstrates how Türkiye is evolving from a drone supplier to a full-spectrum aerospace partner.
