Pratt & Whitney has granted Hermeus a production licence to become a new qualified source for the F100-PW-229 fighter engine.
A licensed second source
Pratt & Whitney has granted Hermeus a licence to manufacture the F100-PW-229 engine, the companies announced on 15 September 2026. Hermeus is expected to become a new qualified source using a rapid-build production model while meeting Pratt & Whitney engineering, quality and airworthiness standards. The agreement addresses manufacturing capacity; Pratt & Whitney retains the design authority and established programme role.
A licence is not the same as immediate approval to deliver flight engines. Hermeus must establish processes, qualify tooling and suppliers, demonstrate configuration control and pass the audits and tests required by Pratt & Whitney and government customers. The announcement did not disclose a contract value, minimum engine quantity, first-delivery date or the allocation of future orders between the two producers.
An engine with a large installed base
The F100 family powers variants of the F-15 and F-16 and has accumulated more than 32 million flight hours, according to RTX. The -229 model is a mature afterburning turbofan used across multiple international fleets. That installed base creates continuing demand for sustainment, parts and, in some cases, new or replacement engines even as newer propulsion programmes advance.
Adding a qualified source can reduce dependence on one production flow and provide surge options, but it can also create duplication if demand is insufficient. Governments will want equivalent performance, life and traceability regardless of which factory built an engine. Common technical data, controlled special processes and shared non-conformance procedures are therefore central to the arrangement, not administrative details.
Hermeus gains an industrial bridge
Hermeus is developing high-speed aircraft and has used the F100 in its Quarterhorse programme. The company reported that a Quarterhorse vehicle achieved supersonic flight earlier in 2026. Licensed engine manufacture can support its own test demand while creating revenue and factory discipline around a proven product, potentially bridging the period before larger Hermeus aircraft reach production.
The strategy differs from designing a new propulsion system from scratch. A mature engine gives the company known interfaces, extensive operating history and an existing support ecosystem. In exchange, Hermeus must build to another company’s approved definition and cannot freely alter the engine for speed or cost. Any changes for a new aircraft would need formal engineering and airworthiness treatment.
Qualification will determine the timetable
The most important near-term milestone is qualification of the Hermeus production system. That process can include first-article inspections, component and engine tests, supplier validation, quality-system reviews and comparison with baseline performance. It may also require customer-specific approval before an engine can enter a military fleet. No public schedule for completing those steps accompanied the announcement.
A successful second source could improve lead times and provide capacity for US and allied users, particularly if demand rises faster than the existing line can absorb. It could also demonstrate a model in which a newer aerospace company applies digital manufacturing and rapid iteration to a legacy military product. Those benefits must be shown through cost, yield, durability and on-time delivery rather than assumed from the licensing agreement.
The deal is thus a meaningful industrial decision but not yet a delivered-engine milestone. Evidence to watch includes facility qualification, a first conforming engine, completed acceptance tests and a customer order that identifies Hermeus-built units. Until those events occur, the accurate description is that Hermeus has been selected to develop a licensed, qualified F100-PW-229 production source under Pratt & Whitney oversight. Sustainment arrangements will be another test: operators need serial-number traceability, approved repair instructions and interchangeable spares throughout decades of service. A new-build source that cannot plug into the existing support network would add complexity instead of resilience, so the licence must be matched by common lifecycle processes.
