Current status
ATMACA is Türkiye’s indigenous anti-ship cruise missile developed by Roketsan for the Turkish Naval Forces. SSB’s 2024–2028 sector strategy states that ATMACA and SOM had entered inventory and were being used on platforms, placing ATMACA beyond the development-only phase.
Operational integration continues to expand. During Denizkurdu-2/2026, SSB reported on 16 June 2026 that an ATMACA anti-ship missile successfully struck a surface target. ASELSAN’s modernisation work on TCG ORUÇREİS has also included the ATMACA Fire Control System, illustrating how the missile is being integrated into modernised as well as newly built Turkish naval combatants.
Roketsan’s current published ATMACA material lists a 250 km range, 220 kg warhead, low radar cross-section, data-link target update, mission-abort and re-attack capability, and a mix of RF/IIR terminal-seeker options in the current product family. It also lists surface, submarine, air, land-mobile and fixed-launch configurations.
Those broad platform listings should not be interpreted to mean every ATMACA configuration has entered operational service. Each launch mode requires its own test and acceptance evidence. For example, SSB separately reported a successful capsule-launched ATMACA test from TCG PREVEZE, demonstrating progress on the submarine-launched configuration.
ATMACA must also remain distinct from KARA ATMACA, which is a separate land-attack weapon programme even though the systems share lineage and branding.
Why it matters
ATMACA replaces a critical imported naval strike function with a missile whose software, mission planning, seeker development and integration can be controlled within Türkiye’s own defence ecosystem.
Its importance grows as Türkiye expands MİLGEM, İSTİF and future naval programmes. A sovereign anti-ship missile allows ship design, combat-management systems and weapon integration to be coordinated without relying entirely on foreign weapon release and upgrade processes.
The programme is also evolving from a single ship-launched missile toward a wider strike family. Submarine, air and alternative launch configurations can create commonality across naval and joint-force strike architectures, but Defence Agenda should track each configuration separately.
