Türkiye’s indigenous main battle tank programme: serial production, Army deliveries, subsystem localisation, protection systems and the transition to a domestic powerpack.

Current status

ALTAY has moved from development into serial-production and inventory introduction. SSB currently states that the indigenous main battle tank has entered the Turkish Land Forces inventory. BMC records the delivery of serial-production New ALTAY tanks on 28 October 2025 and maintains a production contract covering 250 vehicles.

Why it matters

ALTAY is not only a tank procurement programme. It consolidates Türkiye’s heavy-armour industrial base across fire control, active protection, armour, guns, powertrain technology and tracked-vehicle manufacturing.

The remaining powerpack localisation path is strategically important because propulsion has historically been the programme’s most visible external dependency.
