Türkiye’s defence industry is undergoing a major transformation—driven by homegrown systems like KAAN and SİPER, record-breaking export figures, and global showcases like IDEF 2025. This article presents a strategic overview of that evolution.
Indigenous Platforms Driving Autonomy
Türkiye’s shift toward defence sovereignty has accelerated through domestic programs such as the KAAN fifth-generation fighter jet, the SİPER long-range air defence system, and the ÖZGÜR modernization project for legacy F-16s.
KAAN: Fifth-Gen Fighter Readies for Mass Production
According to the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), KAAN has completed two successful test flights. As a result, six additional prototypes are underway, with serial production of 20 units scheduled by 2028.
Moreover, KAAN strengthens Türkiye’s aerospace ecosystem and enables strategic air superiority through indigenously developed systems.
SİPER: Long-Range Shield Against Aerial Threats
SİPER has entered mass production, with initial deliveries completed. Furthermore, the system enables multi-layered defence using integrated radars, sensors, and long-range interceptors against high-altitude threats.
ÖZGÜR: Avionics Modernization of F-16 Fleet
The ÖZGÜR Project upgrades F-16 Block 30–50 aircraft with national mission computers, AESA radar, and avionics. Consequently, Türkiye reduces foreign dependency while enhancing air combat capabilities. Deliveries are expected between 2025 and 2027.
Record Defence Exports Position Türkiye Globally
In 2024, Türkiye’s defence and aerospace exports reached $7.1 billion, rising from $200 million in 2002. As a result, the country is now the 11th-largest exporter globally and aims to enter the top 10 by 2025.
First Half of 2025: 33% Surge in Exports
According to SIPRI, Türkiye exported $4 billion worth of defence products in the first six months of 2025—a 33% increase year-on-year. This reflects growing demand for its combat-proven UAVs, air defence systems, and land platforms.
Workforce Efficiency and High-Tech Output
The industry employs 95,000+ professionals. Interestingly, export productivity exceeds $70,000 per employee, illustrating Türkiye’s shift toward advanced, high-value manufacturing and R&D-intensive exports.
ALTAY Tanks & Active Protection Integration
The ALTAY main battle tank is set for its first three deliveries in 2025. Subsequently, annual production is expected to reach 20 tanks. This project strengthens the Turkish Land Forces’ modern armoured capability.
AKKOR and PULAT: Next-Gen Survivability
ALTAY tanks will feature AKKOR and PULAT active protection systems. These radar-guided interceptors neutralize anti-tank threats in real-time, significantly boosting platform survivability on the battlefield.
