FNSS and CSG Defence Form Slovak Joint Venture to Build KARPAT for Europe

FNSS and Slovakia-based CSG Defence have agreed to establish a new European land systems joint venture, Danube Defence Systems, to manufacture and market modern armoured vehicle platforms for European users.

The agreement was reached during Eurosatory 2026 in Paris and marks a significant step in FNSS’s effort to transfer its tracked and wheeled armoured vehicle expertise into a European production framework. The new company will initially focus on KARPAT, a medium tank derived from the KAPLAN MT platform, while later expanding its portfolio to other FNSS armoured vehicle solutions.

According to reporting by SavunmaSanayiST and DefenceTurk, Danube Defence Systems is expected to be structured with CSG Defence holding 51% and FNSS holding 49%. The company is planned to operate from Trenčín, Slovakia, using CSG’s European industrial base and MSM Land Systems’ facilities as the foundation for production, integration and testing activities.

KARPAT to Lead the Joint Venture Portfolio

The first product of the new venture will be the KARPAT medium tank, also referred to as CFL-120 KARPAT. The platform is based on FNSS’s KAPLAN MT design and is positioned as a mobile fire support solution for armed forces seeking main battle tank-level firepower without the procurement, sustainment and mobility burdens of heavier tank fleets.

KARPAT is designed around a 120 mm main gun configuration and is intended to combine high mobility, reduced logistical footprint and modern survivability features. For European land forces, this places the platform in a segment increasingly shaped by the need for deployable, supportable and locally producible armoured firepower.

The joint venture is expected to support not only the KARPAT medium tank but also future variants of the KARPAT family, including armoured personnel carrier and infantry fighting vehicle configurations. The portfolio may also incorporate FNSS wheeled and tracked vehicle platforms, as well as turret systems, depending on future customer requirements.

European Production and Local Industrial Participation

The establishment of Danube Defence Systems reflects a broader shift in European defence procurement. NATO and European customers are increasingly prioritising local production, secure supply chains, industrial participation and sustainment capacity inside Europe.

Under the planned structure, FNSS will provide technology transfer, engineering support, know-how and platform licences. CSG Defence will contribute its European production infrastructure, local market access and industrial network. Production activities are expected to involve Slovak and European-origin subsystems to increase local content.

Initial industrial work is expected to include hull production, automotive subsystem integration, powerpack integration, final assembly and testing. The use of MSM Land Systems’ facilities in Trenčín gives the venture a production base inside the European Union and close to several NATO markets.

The venture is also expected to create direct and indirect employment in Slovakia as production scales. This makes the project not only a defence export initiative for FNSS, but also an industrial localisation programme for CSG Defence and the Slovak defence ecosystem.

Strategic Value for FNSS and European Land Forces

For FNSS, Danube Defence Systems creates a European manufacturing route for its armoured vehicle portfolio at a time when European demand for land warfare capability is rising. The company has already developed a broad portfolio across tracked vehicles, wheeled armoured vehicles, amphibious platforms, turrets and modernisation solutions.

For CSG Defence, the agreement strengthens its position in the European armoured vehicle market by adding a proven Turkish tracked platform family to its industrial base. The partnership combines FNSS’s vehicle engineering background with CSG’s regional production capacity and market access.

The timing is also relevant. European armies are reassessing armoured mobility, fire support and survivability requirements after observing high-intensity warfare, drone-enabled targeting and the operational pressure on legacy heavy platforms. Medium tanks and modular armoured platforms are therefore gaining renewed relevance, particularly for countries seeking firepower with lower operating costs and easier deployment.

A New Route for Turkish Defence Industrial Expansion

The creation of Danube Defence Systems shows how Turkish defence companies are increasingly using joint ventures, local production models and European industrial partnerships to access allied markets.

Rather than exporting finished vehicles only from Türkiye, FNSS is positioning its technologies within a European production and sustainment structure. This model may improve competitiveness in tenders where local content, supply-chain resilience and long-term support are decisive factors.

If successfully executed, Danube Defence Systems could become a new European platform for FNSS armoured vehicle exports, starting with KARPAT and potentially expanding into broader tracked and wheeled vehicle programmes.
